Golf Courses in Laurel Highlands
The Laurel Highlands, stretching through Fayette and Somerset counties about an hour southeast of Pittsburgh, is where Western Pennsylvania golf reaches its most dramatic. This is mountain golf at its finest: elevation changes that make your driver feel like a different club, panoramic views of ridgelines and valleys, and course designs that use the natural terrain in ways that flatter courses simply cannot. Nemacolin Woodlands Resort anchors the region with two Pete Dye-designed championship courses. Mystic Rock, which has hosted PGA Tour events, is one of the most acclaimed resort courses in the eastern United States. Shepherd's Rock, the newer of the two, offers a more modern design with equally stunning scenery. Beyond Nemacolin, the Laurel Highlands has a collection of public and semi-private courses that benefit from the mountain setting. These are not your typical suburban layouts. The air is cooler, the scenery is better, and the experience feels like a golf trip even though you are still less than 90 minutes from Pittsburgh. For golfers who want to make a day of it, the Laurel Highlands pairs perfectly with visits to Fallingwater, Ohiopyle State Park, or the small towns along the Lincoln Highway.
Why Play in Laurel Highlands
This is destination golf that happens to be close to home. The mountain setting creates courses with character you will not find on the flatter terrain closer to the city. Nemacolin's two courses alone justify the trip, but the other courses in the region offer their own unique experiences at much lower price points. If you have out-of-town guests who golf, bring them here.
Best for
- Destination golf experiences
- Weekend getaways combining golf and outdoors
- Entertaining out-of-town guests
- Golfers who want dramatic scenery and elevation changes
Getting There
Take the Pennsylvania Turnpike (I-76) east, then head south on Route 31 or Route 40 depending on your destination. Nemacolin is about 75 minutes from downtown Pittsburgh. Other Laurel Highlands courses range from 60 to 90 minutes from the city. The drive is scenic, especially once you leave the Turnpike.
Season Tip
Mountain courses open later (mid to late April) and close earlier (late October) than courses near the city. The higher elevation means cooler temperatures in summer, making the Laurel Highlands a great escape from Pittsburgh heat in July and August. Fall foliage rounds in late September and early October are unforgettable.
