The Pittsburgh Golf Calendar
Pittsburgh golf has a clear seasonal rhythm. Understanding it helps you plan better rounds, find better deals, and avoid the crowds. Here is what to expect month by month.
Early Season: March and April
Most Pittsburgh-area courses start opening in mid to late March, depending on the weather. Do not expect perfect conditions this early. Fairways are soft, some holes might have temporary greens, and cart restrictions are common. But the upside is empty tee sheets and low rates.
Pro tip: Call ahead before driving out. Courses may close again if a late frost or heavy rain hits. Many courses post daily updates on their websites or social media.
Peak Season: May Through September
This is when Pittsburgh golf is at its best. Courses are fully open, conditions are dialed in, and the days are long enough for twilight rounds after work.
May and June tend to have the best course conditions. The grass is growing, greens are firm, and the summer heat has not baked everything out yet.
July and August bring the heat. Expect firm, fast conditions and the occasional thunderstorm rolling through. Early morning tee times are the move if you want to beat the heat and the crowds.
September might be the most underrated month for Pittsburgh golf. The weather cools down, the crowds thin out, and course conditions are still solid. If you can only play one month a year, make it September.
Fall Golf: October and November
Fall golf in Pittsburgh is special. The leaves change, the air is crisp, and the courses are wide open. Many courses drop their rates starting in October, making it the best value of the year.
Most courses stay open through November, weather permitting. Some will run until the first hard freeze. Again, call ahead since hours and availability change quickly in late fall.
Winter: December Through February
A few hardy courses stay open for winter golf if the ground is not frozen. Do not expect pristine conditions, but if you get a 50-degree day in January, it beats sitting inside.
Some courses offer winter rates or punch cards that let you play whenever the course is open. It is worth asking.
