Eighteen is an accident of history
There is no reason a round of golf is eighteen holes beyond the fact that St Andrews settled on that number in 1764 and everyone copied it. It is not a natural unit. It is not the amount of golf that produces the best experience. It is a convention that has quietly cost the game an enormous number of players, because five hours is more than most adults with jobs and families can give to a hobby on a regular basis.
Nine holes takes about two hours walking and closer to ninety minutes with a cart. That fits inside an evening. It fits before work in the summer. It fits into a Saturday without consuming it.

What you actually give up
Less than you would expect.
You still hit driver. You still face approach shots and putts that matter. You still have a score, and if you play the same nine regularly you will get a much clearer read on your progress than you would from eighteen holes at a different course each time.
What you lose is the middle stretch where concentration goes. Most amateurs play their worst golf between the eighth and thirteenth holes, which is precisely the part nine-hole golf skips.
It is the best format for three specific people
Beginners. Four and a half hours of struggling is discouraging. Two hours is a pastime. The single biggest reason people quit golf early is that their first experiences were too long and too public, and nine holes fixes both.
Parents introducing a kid. Attention spans are finite and the drive home after a bad back nine is not how you make someone love a game.
Anyone who plays after work. From May to August you can finish nine after five o'clock without rushing. This is the format that turns golf from an occasional event into a regular habit, and habit is what makes people better.
The economics
A nine-hole round typically costs roughly half to two thirds of eighteen at the same course. Per hour of enjoyment it is the cheapest golf available, and it is far easier to justify twice a week than one expensive weekend round.
Many courses will also let you go around twice at a reduced rate if you decide halfway that you want the full round, which is the best of both.
Not all nines are short
Worth clearing up a common assumption. Several nine-hole courses around here are full-length par 35 or 36 layouts, not executive tracks. The golf is real, the holes are proper holes, and playing one twice gives you a legitimate eighteen-hole score.
Others genuinely are short and forgiving, which is exactly right if you are teaching someone. The directory lists par where we have it, so you can tell the difference before you drive out.
A practical note
Nine-hole courses near the city fill up fast on summer evenings once leagues finish, roughly from six o'clock onwards. Ring ahead or go earlier. Weekday mornings are wide open almost everywhere.
